Call to Action
Participants of the town meeting were asked to answer one (or both) of the following questions:
What can somebody (or a group) from Sitka do with my organization/program right now to make a difference for youth?
What would I like to see anyone do in their home or neighborhood to make a positive difference for youth?
Here's what they have to say:
SAFV
- Adults to walk on Sitka trails with youth
- Teens to join a peer education program that promotes healthy choices
- Adults to model healthy relationships
SEARHC Health Promotions
- Lunchtime 20 –30 minutes walking for exercise (adults to walk with teens)
- Adults to cook healthy meals for/with youth
- Adults to role model healthy relationships
- Youth to become a part of a youth advisory council for substance abuse prevention planning.
- Youth to be pen pals for youth living in Southeast
Community Members
- A teen event calendar so teens can schedule pick-up games and other events.
- Community Schools or Ed. Consortium
- Do we have an academic decathlon tem in Sitka? If there is interest I want to get one going. (Felix Au Yeung)
- Adults must avoid making assumptions about youth based on their previous poor choices.
- Adults can sign up for basic computer class run by teens
- Chaperone for a school dance
- Help the youth football team build a storage shed for football equipment and help with the field
- Parent supervision to open a gym (MPR) for after school open gym
- More activities between MEHS, Pacific High and SHS, fun stuff
- Attend a school event you never before attended
- Support a youth group fundraiser, buy a raffle ticket you would not normally buy
Big Brothers and Big sisters
- Volunteer as a big brother or big sister
Raven’s Way
- Adults and teens to be a guest speaker about recovery and cultural experiences
- Volunteer for a youth needs assessment
Youth Advocates of Sitka
- Help to plan summer activities for Hanson House
Crossing Bridges
- A safe home in every neighborhood
- Activity opportunities for teens
Community Schools
- Groups/individuals to donate time/resources to create fun activities or training that connect youth and adults
- Volunteer 1½ - 2 hours per week leading or assisting with an after school activity. Call Rick Peterson 966 –1453 to get started
- Contribute time/supplies for before – school snack program
The Sitka Sentinel
- Teens and adults are invited and encouraged to write letters to the editor
Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL)
- Youth and adults for Youth in Transition Advisory Board
- Volunteers for the recreation program, ORCA
- Youth internships in SAIL office
