Community Schools: Keeping Sitka Active and Learning |

There is probably no organization in Sitka that is involved with more people than Community Schools. Hundreds of children, adults, and families are involved in a wide variety of activities throughout the year. Youth athletic programs and activities include basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, gymnastics, and the ever-popular karate. After school programs for the kids can be a variety of academics, recreation, and sports. There is after school tutoring at Baranof, Keet Gooshi Heen, and Blatchley, with up to 100 different students participating during the year. Recreational programs in those schools have included chess clubs, cooking, knitting, geo tracking, cup speed stacking, French & Spanish, sewing, archery, unicycle riding, mad scientist, cribbage, art groups, gym activities, and theater.

Other activities such as service learning and recycling occur during the school day and also involve a large number of students. Our after school childcare program, Ventures, operates all year round Approximately 500 kids participate in our summer programs, including summer camps, swimming lessons, and SCORE. Adult activities include men and women’s basketball, coed volleyball, several fitness classes in the gyms and the pool, woodshop, and sewing. Plus, if your group wants a meeting, we schedule it in the schools. Family activities we sponsor include open swimming four nights per week, recycling, our community garden, the baby quilt project, the annual Turkey Trot, and the annual Grandparents Dinner.
